Angie McMahon Essentials

Unflinching emotional truth has always been a creative signature for Angie McMahon, going back to the Melbourne songwriter’s 2017 debut single, “Slow Mover”. That low-slung confessional also introduced her dusky vocals, which have only grown in confidence and dramatic reach since then. See “Pasta”, the slow-fast-slow breakout of her 2019 album Salt, or her deeply moving duet with Leif Vollebekk on 2020’s “If You Call”. McMahon’s diaristic lyrics found thrilling new scope on 2023’s Light, Dark, Light Again, marrying her inward-looking mantras to widescreen indie rock worthy of The War on Drugs. “I’ve been trying to identify what I’m afraid of and why,” she told Apple Music, “and trying to go towards it.” McMahon does just that on the spacious opener “Saturn Returning” and especially “Letting Go”, a horizon-chasing anthem that culminates in the repeated wisdom “It’s OK/Make mistakes”. She may well be singing to herself, but it’s easy to feel like she’s granting glorious permission to all of us at once.
