Alice Skye: Influences

“I was very influenced by my older siblings,” Alice Skye tells Apple Music about the songs, artists and albums that shaped her. “A large portion of my iTunes library had come from them. So for this playlist, I mostly thought about what would’ve been on my MP3 player or iPod.” The Wergaia artist’s sound is often tender and deeply emotive, and it’s no surprise that many of her influences are heavy on introspective lyrics, emotive vocals and big melodies. Avril Lavigne, “Losing Grip” “I would constantly take Avril Lavigne’s huge album, Let Go, from my sister’s room to play on my CD player. I think I spilt milk on the lyric booklet, causing my sister not to want it anymore—it was a win for me, because I was obsessed.” The Cranberries, “Ode to My Family” “It was hard to choose just one, because I was and still am hugely inspired by The Cranberries and Dolores O’Riordan. It’s one of the earliest songs I remember hearing and just falling in love with how it made me feel.” Mitski, “Your Best American Girl” “I had to choose two Mitski songs for this playlist because she’s probably been the biggest, most recent influence for me in terms of both lyrics and sound. I love this song and the journey of it. It feels cathartic and kind of victorious towards the end when she says, ‘I do, I finally do…’” Phoebe Bridgers, “Graceland Too” “I love sad songs and I just think this is so heartbreaking and perfect.” Missy Higgins, “They Weren’t There” “Missy Higgins’ whole Sound of White album was around for such formative years of mine. I would have been five or six when it came out, but I listened to it all through high school. I was always a backup singer, so I’d always return to this album to practise by singing along with the harmonies. When I revisit it now, I remember how important it was to me and how many moments it kept me company.”
