About Two Tons O' Fun

San Francisco vocalists Martha Wash and Izora Redman comprised Two Tons o' Fun. They began singing together in gospel ensembles and choirs, having met in the group NOW (News of the World). They gained initial recognition during the mid- to late-'70s as background singers for disco performer Sylvester. Their glorious voices capably supported his on the hits "Dance (Disco Heat)" and "(You Make Me Feel) Mighty Real," plus his albums. The legendary performer, producer, and composer Harvey Fuqua signed the duo to his Fantasy-distributed Honey label, for which the singers issued a pair of albums in 1980. Two Tons o' Fun featured the minor R&B hits "Just Us" and "Taking Away Your Space," while Backatcha, credited to Two Tons, included a third charting A-side, "Never Like This." Wash and Redman subsequently had three chart singles as the Weather Girls from 1982-1985, the biggest of which was "It's Raining Men" in 1982. ~ Ron Wynn
