Pauline Frechette is a singer and songwriter who has also recorded under the pseudonym Raven Kane. As a studio singer from the late '80s through the early 2010s, she appeared on recordings by Neil Diamond, Leonard Cohen, and Ringo Starr, to name a few. Her songwriting resumé includes pop acts such as the Carpenters, as well as a variety of theater projects. As a solo artist, she made her debut on the Billboard jazz and classical charts in 2018. Frechette was born to family of musicians: her great-grandfather was Josef Vezina, founder of the Quebec Symphony, her grandfather Raoul Vezina led a marching band, and her father Frigon Louis Frechette was a theater and concert organist. Her husband is composer/arranger/conductor David Campbell (father of alternative rock musician Beck), and their daughter is singer/songwriter Alyssa Suede. Frechette was raised outside of Chicago, where she sang on her father's radio show, played violin in the Youth Symphony, and took part in piano competitions, winning several. As a teenager, she toured Europe as a member of the Showteens, then moved to London, where she performed in clubs, composed music for theater groups, and studied acting at the London School of Dramatic Art and the Bristol Old Vic. After returning to the U.S., Frechette attended the American Conservatory of Music in Indiana, where she won the Farwell Award from Chicago's Musicians Club of Women three years in a row. She then moved to New York City, where she pieced together a living as a jingle writer, pop songwriter (the Carpenters), TV and film songwriter (Infinity Factory, Mind Games), and club act. As Raven Kane, she collaborated with Klaus Netzle on Silicon Valley, an album of theatrical songs released by Teldec Records in Germany in 1984. She followed it with a theater tour of the country. Also in the realm of theater, Frechette's projects as a composer/lyricist have included the rock opera Artaria and the musicals The Adventures of Denton the Dragon and Survival of the Heart. With a style that bridged classic cabaret and contemporary vocal jazz, she released the solo album Colors of My Heart via Viscount Music in 2018 as Pauline Frechette. Featuring a collaboration with Stanley Clarke, it debuted at number three on Billboard's classical and classical crossover charts, also reaching the Top Ten of the jazz and traditional jazz charts. A year later, Frechette issued a second solo album, this time a collection of original neo-classical pieces for solo piano called An Intimate Story. ~ Marcy Donelson
