About Hoagy Carmichael
He was a pianist, singer, and occasional actor, but Hoagy Carmichael is best known as one of the most significant songwriters of popular standards of all time. He wrote “Stardust,” “Skylark,” and “Georgia On My Mind,” among many others. Born in the Midwest the last year of the 19th century, Carmichael was a child of the Jazz Age and even played with the noted ‘20s bandleader Paul Whiteman. By the mid-‘30s, he was working in Hollywood, and eventually appeared as an actor-musician in films, including the classic TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT. And while he also had a modest career as a recording artist, Carmichael will still remain known as a major American composer on a par with George Gershwin and Cole Porter.
