Much has happened since master guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel released The Remedy (Live at the Village Vanguard) in 2008. His long-standing musical partnership with tenor saxophonist Mark Turner was winding down as he pursued new directions and sonic concepts—notably on the 2012 album Star of Jupiter with pianist/keyboardist Aaron Parks, bassist Eric Revis and drummer Justin Faulkner. That quartet, with Gregory Hutchinson in place of Faulkner on drums, reconvenes for Undercover, Rosenwinkel’s second Vanguard dispatch. Fans of his 2022 solo release Kurt Rosenwinkel Plays Piano will note the full-band versions of “Cycle Five” and “Music”, which are strikingly dissimilar in their harmonic makeup. “Our Secret World” first appeared on Heartcore (2003); it was also the title track of a 2010 big-band collaboration with Portugal’s Orquestra Jazz de Matosinhos. There is continuity, then, in these career threads, even as Rosenwinkel and his colleagues embrace new and intriguing sounds on “The Past Intact,” the flowing and lyrical “Solé” and the driving, nastily synth-infused finale “Undercover”.
