“The last couple of years, for me, was about finding myself as an artist and songwriter,” Josh Ross tells Apple Music. “Learning the things I wanted to say and being OK with being honest about what I was going through.” You can hear maturation in the three songs the Ontario-born, Nashville-based singer-songwriter assembled for his Apple Music Home Session, which he recorded with a full band and includes alternate versions of his plaintive “First Taste of Gone” and the more wide-screen “On a Different Night”. Ross chose to include the latter here “to showcase another side of my sound,” he says. “Even though the lyrics can be on the more heartfelt side, it has an energy that lifts the song and makes it feel fun.” He also manages to tease out a Southern strain from The Goo Goo Dolls’ classic ’90s ballad “Iris”. "I wanted to play it more stripped down and give it a more country feel, in a natural way,” Ross says. “But also not get too far away from the original. It’s a song I grew up on that I feel I connect with and also showcases my voice.”
