About Elis Regina

Brazilian vocalist Elis Regina's brand of peppery, emotional singing brought the songs of the 1960s bossa nova era to life, and her collaborations with Jair Rodrigues and Antonio Carlos Jobim became huge international best-sellers. Gifted with both great style and a technically excellent voice (many of her most celebrated recordings were first takes), Regina was one of the early interpreters of up-and-coming songwriters like Gilberto Gil, Vinicius de Moraes, and Baden Powell, and helped catapult their respective careers. She toured Europe and Latin America many times in the '60s and '70s, becoming an international star, and died tragically from an accidental overdose at the age of 36 in 1982.
