Crate Junkie

Crate Junkie

Taking over this edition of Crate Junkies is the Toronto troupe BADBADNOTGOOD, who utilise their love of jazz and hip-hop to create a unique style of soundscapes that straddles the line between ’70s soul-jazz, experimental sounds and alternative hip-hop. The band’s eclectic interests are reflected within this playlist with tracks from Atlanta hip-hop group Outkast, the atmospheric sounds of Nujabes, and many more. Below, bassist Chester Hansen comments on a few of their selections. If you hear something you like, add it to your library. Michael White, “The Blessing Song” “One morning, while driving to a recording session for our latest album, I flipped the radio to KXLU in LA, and this was playing. Beautiful combination of violin, harmonies, spiritual jazz groove. It’s a special thing to hear something magical totally by chance on the radio, which doesn’t happen too much these days in our current music consumption landscape. Long live independent radio!” The Temprees, “You Make the Sunshine” “Another KXLU discovery from the same week. I was blown away by the harmonies and arrangement. Beautiful song and the whole band is killing it. Unbelievable cross-stick sound.” Rupa, “Aaj Shanibar” “Really cool record that was made in Calgary in the ’80s. A combo of Indian Canadian musicians that created a really interesting sound, this song is a SERIOUS jam!”
