Ralph Stanley's voice is the definition of bluegrass's high lonesome sound. Rural Virginia's Stanley Brothers enjoyed success between the late '40s and Carter Stanley's death in 1966. Ralph, the tenor-singing, banjo-playing younger brother, continued on his own after Carter's passing, and he headlined festivals and concerts into the '10s. The soundtrack to the hit 2000 movie O Brother, Where Art Thou? was built around his repertoire and brought him renown far beyond the usual bluegrass and country audiences.
