About The Supremes

Motown’s premier girl group lent their voices to many of the biggest hits of the ’60s for the label. Formed in 1959 as The Primettes—the sister act to the Detroit vocal act The Primes—the group, who would go on to have Florence Ballard, Diana Ross and Mary Wilson as their members until 1967, began performing around the Motor City and became renowned for dazzling live vocals. The trio signed to Motown in 1961 and changed their name to The Supremes, and although their early recording efforts stalled on the charts, linking up with the songwriting and production team Holland-Dozier-Holland led to them minting No. 1 smashes like “Where Did Our Love Go”, “Baby Love” and “Stop! In the Name of Love”. Ballard left in 1967 and The Supremes were rechristened with Ross as leader; she departed in 1970, with Wilson remaining the only original Supremes member through rotating lineups until the group’s dissolution in 1977.
