There's a good reason that Héctor Lavoe's fans refer to him as "El Cantante de los Cantantes", or "The Singer of Singers". As the voice of Willie Colón's influential salsa band in the late '60s and early '70s, he was an instant success thanks to his sharp wit and a knack for improvisation. Lavoe's star continued to rise during the '70s as a solo artist thanks to hit albums like La Voz and Revento. Unfortunately, the Puerto Rican superstar struggled with vices (including a drug addiction) that contributed to his untimely death in '93 at the age of 46.
