ØZI: New Year Playlist

At ØZI’s house, every Lunar New Year is like a “weeklong house party.” “My mom throws parties and invites all their friends,” he tells Apple Music. “So every day there’d be some of my dad’s friends, my mom’s friends, and my friends.” Good thing, because he has lots to celebrate. Los Angeles-born and Taipei-bred, the 22-year-old rapper/singer/producer is drawing international attention to Mandarin hip-hop with his hit tracks, powerful collaborations and fashion brand endorsements. He’s even won Best New Artist at the 30th Golden Melody Awards and the same at Singapore’s Freshmusic Awards. ØZI’s string of success reflects his choices for a New Year soundtrack. “I think songs that reflect my idea of Chinese New Year probably have to do with money,” he says. “And the first song that comes to mind is ‘Gong Xi Fa Cai’ (Good Fortune and Wealth).” He also names Cardi B’s “Money” and “Red Money” by China Mac as some of his top choices. For ØZI, money is an essential part of Lunar New Year—it represents fortune and good wishes. When everyone gets together, it isn’t long before the cards and mahjong tiles come out. “When I think about Chinese New Year, a big part of it is red envelopes and playing cards,” ØZI says. But ØZI’s playlist isn’t just songs about getting money or traditional New Year’s music—it’s about creating a festive occasion. “It’s the kind of music that when you hear it, you’ll feel happy and want to hang with your friends.”  For the rapper, the core of Lunar New Year is coming together to celebrate friendship and family—all night. “Everyone is on holiday, so we can party until daybreak,” he says. “No matter if it’s playing cards or just eating … it’s a chance for everybody to get together and for my closest friends to connect.” Lastly, ØZI leaves us with a rich holiday blessing: a Chinese portmanteau that’s everyone’s New Year favourite. “If I had to choose one Chinese character for a blessing, it’s one that incorporates wealth and treasure together—meaning ‘attract wealth and find fortune.’ I'm choosing this because I want to make money!”
