About Cultura Profética

Formed in 1996, the pioneering reggae en español group Cultura Profética started as a covers band in San Juan, Puerto Rico. ∙ They recorded their debut album, Canción de Alerta, at Kingston’s legendary Tuff Gong Studio, becoming the first Spanish-language artists to do so. ∙ In 2000, Cultura Profética released their second album, Ideas Nuevas, introducing bossa nova, salsa, ska, and jazz into their reggae sound. ∙ The band’s 2005 release, M.O.T.A., was their first to reach the Top 20 on Billboard’s Hot Latin chart. ∙ After building a reputation for their original music, they released 2007’s Tribute to the Legend Bob Marley, a live recording of the group performing his songs. ∙ 2010’s La Dulzura was their first independent album, incorporating tango into their blend of reggae, salsa, and bossa nova. ∙ Cultura Profética teamed up with John Legend and mariachi outfit Flor de Toloache in 2020 for the cross-cultural single “Quisiera.” ∙ Sobrevolando won a 2020 Latin Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album and was nominated for a 2021 Grammy for Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album.
