About Carlton Anderson

A Texan by birth and a Nashvillian by inclination, Carlton Anderson is a country artist whose music blends the emotion and honesty of classic Lone Star country with the upbeat approach of contemporary Nashville sounds. The songs, many written by Anderson himself, are buoyed by his rich, deep voice. Anderson was making a name for himself in Texas honky tonks not long after graduating from high school, and headed to Nashville in 2012 to go to college and try to grab the brass ring of a career in music. A combination of hard work and talent helped Anderson realize his dream, and his first major-label release, the single "Drop Everything," was released in 2018. Carlton Anderson grew up in Cypress, Texas, and was born into a family who traditionally served in the military or worked in the nearby oil fields. As a teenager, Anderson played on his school's football team, but when he began listening to Willie Nelson and George Strait, his interests shifted from the gridiron to music. When he was 16 years old, Anderson began working part time at a supermarket and in the oil fields (even though one had to be 18 to legally work on an oil rig) to raise the money for a guitar and a PA system so he could start performing in public. After he graduated from high school, Anderson was playing out regularly at honky tonks in and around his hometown, and with an eye toward advancing his career, Anderson applied to Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. Anderson was accepted, and he moved to Nashville in 2012, taking odd jobs and playing out as often as he could to pay his way through school. Performing regularly in Music City gave Anderson a thorough education in how to win over an audience, and he became a favorite in the nightspots in Nashville's Lower Broadway district, while he frequently headed back to Texas to maintain a connection with his first fans. In 2014, Anderson released an independent EP, and the following year he took part in the Guidance from Publishers for Songwriters Project, a program sponsored by the performance rights organization ASCAP that helps promising songwriters connect with publishers. The project helped Anderson score a publishing contract with Warner/Chappell, and in 2016, after receiving his music business degree, Anderson began ramping up his career. In 2017, Arista Nashville signed Anderson to a recording contract, and his first single for the label, "Drop Everything," was released in May 2018. ~ Mark Deming
