The Hammarsdale, South Africa singer Mduduzi Ncube was playing his guitar outside of the headquarters of the Durban label Afrotainment in 2019 when he was discovered by its founder, the veteran South African musician and executive DJ Tira. That fortuitous moment led to the single “Malokazi”, a 2019 duet with Zimbabwean singer Berita, released through Afrotainment. In 2020, Mduduzi released his debut album, Isiginci (Guitar), through Inkhabi Records, the label founded by the South African rap star Big Zulu, and lent his voice to Zulu’s anthemic celebration of perseverance, “Inhlupehko”.
