While the rest of Bristol was chilling itself out with glacial trip-hop in the early ‘90s, Nick Warren and Jody Wisternoff of Way Out West were busily immersing themselves in the buoyant rush of house, giving it an earthy infusion with syncopated funk breakbeats. The duo take their songwriting as seriously as they do experimenting with rhythms and musical textures. Most of their tunes are melancholy tales of bad love, given pleading urgency by their relentlessly chipper surroundings. So crying becomes dancing, and dancing becomes healing.
