One of the formative bands who came up in North Carolina's Chapel Hill music scene, Superchunk's marriage of punk rock riffs and pop hooks formed the blueprint for a bevy of ‘90s alt-rock and post-punk bands that followed. The group's sound has stayed consistent throughout the years, even as they added orchestral touches to the mix with 1999's Come Pick Me Up. Spurred on by the DIY ethos of original members Mac McCaughan and Laura Ballance, they established Merge Records in 1989—a label that's now become a veritable indie giant.
