Regina Spektor Essentials

A classically trained pianist who grew up listening to American pop music before immigrating from Russia to the U.S., Regina Spektor's sound is a sum of the cultural bits she picked up along the way. At once quirky and affecting, Spektor's found a niche in Brooklyn's anti-folk scene, breaking out with her third LP Soviet Kitsch in 2004 when fellow New Yorkers The Strokes took notice and brought her on tour. 2006's Far took her to the mainstream, and she's composed music for films and musicals, notably penning the theme for TV hit Orange Is the New Black to raise her profile.
