Philippe Herreweghe Essentials

The Belgian conductor has, like so many of his colleagues, branched out and performs music of many centuries. His Bach Passions made his name, but since then he has given us Haydn's The Seasons, a fine Mozart Requiem, a Brahms German Requiem of real character and more recently a memorable Dvořák's Requiem. Away from choral music, he's recorded Mahler's Fourth on period instruments. Many traditional orchestras, including the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics, called him to give them a quick injection of period manners—with tremendous results.
