Mother Mother Essentials

Since the mid-2000s, Mother Mother’s idiosyncratic song structures and theatrical performances have made the band a resilient and continually exciting presence in their home country’s music scene. Formed in 2005 on Quadra Island in British Columbia, the quintet based their sound around the extroverted dual lead vocals of brother and sister Ryan and Molly Guldemond. Channelling the operatic approach of Queen and the angular histrionics of the Pixies, the group maintained their eccentric sensibility while adopting a sleeker aesthetic and finding increasing success on the Canadian charts (2016’s “The Drugs” and 2018’s “Get Up”, in particular). In 2020, the group’s fanbase expanded thanks to the surprise popularity of the sinister 2008 anthem “Hayloft” on TikTok; Mother Mother then reimagined the track in a more sonically expansive form as “Hayloft II”.
