Morphine Essentials

Morphine Essentials

No other American band in the ‘90s knew the lowdown on low-end sounds quite like Morphine. On such songs as the murky “Buena” and the swaggering “The Other Side”, frontman Mark Sandman had no need for treble. Instead, he doubled down on the potent combination of his customised one- and two-string bass guitars, his baritone voice and Dana Colley's rumbling saxophones. Results could be as funky as “Super Sex” or as sultry as “You Look Like Rain”. Sadly, Sandman's untimely passing ended the Boston band's run, but the posthumous project Vapors of Morphine allowed Colley and other friends to explore the same depths.
