Coming out of the same ‘90s Queens hip-hop scene that produced Nas and A Tribe Called Quest, Mobb Deep presented a new style of street rap with inscrutable slang, colourful wordplay and uncompromising attitude. Prodigy's deadpan delivery and the harsh click-clack of his rapper/producer partner Havoc's beats combined for icily menacing gangsta rap touchstones like “Shook Ones, Pt. II” and “Drop A Gem On ‘Em”. As their career progressed, they developed a more polished sound, crossing over with the creeping groove of “Quiet Storm” and linking up with outside producers like The Alchemist.
