Nailing a savvy convergence of pop hooks and trap swagger, Sydney rapper/singer Harry Michael crafts short yet striking tracks as Masked Wolf. Most of his work clocks in at under three minutes long, which is just enough time to prompt an immediate replay. That’s especially true of his breakthrough “Astronaut in the Ocean”, an atmospheric earworm describing personal dislocation via memorable imagery and hypnotic cadences. Masked Wolf’s 2021 mixtape Astronomical flexed his versatility (see the bright-eyed “Say So”), and a series of collaborations has further expanded the potential of his sound. Aided by Bebe Rexha’s diva-style vocal turn, 2021’s “It’s Not You, It’s Me (Sabotage)” is a surprisingly emotive piano ballad, while 2022’s “Fallout” taps into full-blown alt-rock thanks to bracing guest stars Bring Me The Horizon.
