German-Ukrainian pianist Marina Baranova proved early on that she could tackle any work thrown at her, so she's spent much of her recording career, which began in 2007, taking up decidedly creative angles on brilliant works. For her album Unfolding Debussy, released for the 100-year anniversary of the composer's death, she served up a collection of misty reorchestrations that managed to capture Debussy's essence in all its impressionistic wonder. Her reading of Schumann's First Piano Sonata, meanwhile, evidences a thoughtful performer who's full of wit, curiosity and, above all, passion.
