Lalo Schifrin has the ability to absorb sounds from myriad sources and combine unexpected elements in a completely natural way. Since the start of his career in South America, he's taken the rhythm and panache of bossa nova and incorporated big band jazz and elements of funk, rock and classical, creating work that's become ingrained in the public consciousness via iconic scores for films like Mission: Impossible and Bullitt. Looking back from an age of sample-heavy hip-hop and dance tracks, Schifrin's use of insistent, looped phrases shows itself to be years ahead of its time.
