This particular one shows the stylings of the legendary jazz musician and composer Wynton Marsalis, the musical director of the December/January issue of iconic fashion magazine Harper’s Bazaar, which is producing a series of playlists with different musicians, available only on Apple Music. The long-time artistic director of New York’s Jazz at Lincoln Center selected a wide range of tracks that reflect his belief in the importance of lasting musical traditions. There are foundational genre touchstones like Marvin Gaye’s “Inner City Blues”, Tito Puentes’ “Oye Como Va” and Charlie Parker’s “Now’s the Time”, the bluesy classic Marsalis describes as having “an earthiness and down-home quality”; alongside them are redefining cover takes on standards, from John Coltrane’s experimental bebop flip of “My Favorite Things” to Jimi Hendrix’s rock reimagining of “The Star-Spangled Banner”. “Tradition means that you’re able to be innovative and come up with new things, but at the same time you can speak to the things that existed before,” Marsalis says. “You don’t have to overthrow them to be an innovator.
