The music that vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Liz Harris records as Grouper has an almost hallucinatory stillness about it. Abstract and yet deeply personal, her songs largely consist of fragmentary vocals over guitar and piano melodies spun into reverb-drenched, translucent filigrees. After a series of low-profile releases, 2008's Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill was her breakthrough to an appreciative cult following. Harris has also recorded in collaboration with Xiu Xiu and in the duo projects Mirroring and Slow Walkers.
