Foxy Brown Essentials

The husky-voiced Inga Marchand grew up in Brooklyn and, in the mid-'90s, as Foxy Brown, became one of her borough's most ferocious rappers. The '80s digi-funk of the René & Angela-sampling "I'll Be", with JAY-Z, was a confident leap into the spotlight, while her appearance on supergroup The Firm's "Affirmative Action" was a scene-stealer, thanks to her bars about street mathematics. Around the turn of the millennium, Foxy proved she could adapt to a new, glossier era with the Neptunes-laced "Candy", a gem that splits the difference between pop effervescence and her own precision-controlled rap style.
