Enrico Rava Essentials

Since emerging in the mid-'60s, trumpeter Enrico Rava has arguably been Italy's most significant and beloved jazzman. He's best known for his stunning balladry, in which his intimately burnished tone recalls Miles Davis at his most lyrical. He shines within small group settings: A duo with pianist and protégé Stefano Bollani on “Suzy Wong I” is a marvel of intimacy, while his vibe with saxophonist Mark Turner on the levitating “Lady Orlando” feels utterly telepathic. But Rava has an extroverted side, too, braiding funk thrust and tuneful muscle on a large-band version of Michael Jackson's “Thriller”.
