Nostalgia, loss and national pride commingle in the mellifluous voice and Andalusian-Arabic arrangements of Enrico Macias, born Gaston Ghrenassia in French Algeria in 1938. A Sephardic Jew who left his war-wrecked home in 1961, Macias conveyed his dispossessed brethren's bittersweet memories in Middle Eastern modes featuring cymbals, strings and ouds.
