Enrico Macias Essentials

Nostalgia, loss and national pride commingle in the mellifluous voice and Andalusian-Arabic arrangements of Enrico Macias, born Gaston Ghrenassia in French Algeria in 1938. A Sephardic Jew who left his war-wrecked home in 1961, Macias conveyed his dispossessed brethren's bittersweet memories in Middle Eastern modes featuring cymbals, strings and ouds. (You can also hear the driving synths of Algerian rai in his later work.) Macias is an equally avid musical ambassador of the land that embraced him, celebrating France in lilting, appreciative chanson framed by shimmering organ.
