Califone Essentials

In his ‘90s band Red Red Meat, Tim Rutili subjected raw, Stones-y rave-ups to post-rock abstraction; with Califone, he's retained that adventurous ethos, but applied it to more intimate songcraft. In his hands, even familiar environments feel alien: “Fisherman's Wife”, from 2001, may take the form of a rustic, rickety serenade, yet the natural reverb of his acoustic-guitar plucks are liable to upset your equilibrium. With the 2006 ambient-folk revision of Psychic TV's “The Orchids”, Rutili struck a perfect balance of accessibility and experimentation, but 2009's “Funeral Singers” showed he can still disarm with a simply strummed serenade.
