About Mineria Symphony Orchestra

The Minería Symphony Orchestra is among the most important and acclaimed orchestras in Mexico. It performs works from the traditional repertoire by composers such as Beethoven, Brahms, and Mahler, but it puts a significant emphasis on contemporary music, especially highlighting composers from Mexico and premiering new works by Manuel Enriquez, Mario Lavista, and Gabriela Ortiz, among others. The Minería Symphony Orchestra (or Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería) was founded by artistic director Jorge Velazco in Mexico City in 1978. Carlos Miguel Prieto has been the artistic director since 2006. Under Prieto, the orchestra's recording activities have increased. They earned a Grammy nomination for a 2010 recording of works by Erich Wolfgang Korngold with violinist Philippe Quint. In 2023, Prieto led the orchestra on the album Conciertos Románticos.
