About Maarten Engeltjes

Countertenor Maarten Engeltjes is in demand in both opera and choral music. After his voice broke, Engeltjes decided to continue as a countertenor, making his debut as a countertenor at 16 in a performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion, BWV 244. In 2011, he made his recording debut with the early music ensemble La Venexiana on a recording of Francesco Cavalli's opera Artemisia. Engeltjes has performed widely in both oratorio (as an alto) and in opera, as well as in cantatas and other sacred works. In 2012, he made his debut as a featured artist with Concerto d'Amsterdam in the 1725 version of Bach's Johannes Passion, BWV 245. Engeltjes returned in 2024 with a recording of Pergolesi's Stabat mater and on Harmonia Mundi with the first volume in a series titled "J.S. Bach: A Life in Music."
