About Huun-Huur-Tu

Huun-Huur-Tu’s dissonant but stirringly beautiful music has intrigued western musicians and captivated the general public since the group’s inception in the early ‘90s. The members of the group hail from the rugged Tuva region of eastern Russian and practice the art of Xoomei, or throat singing. Xoomei singers are capable of singing two notes simultaneously, a deep baritone drone overlaid by melodic runs performed in a higher register. Soloists traditionally perform this style of singing, but in 1992, Kaigal-ool Kholvalyg, Alexander Bapa, Sayan Bapa, and Albert Kuvezin decided to perform traditional Tuvan music as an ensemble. Huun-Huur-Tu has collaborated with musicians as diverse as Ry Cooder, Kronos Quartet, and Frank Zappa.
