An Unexpected Mozart

This double album continues a series of recordings featuring historical instruments housed at the Musée de la musique in Paris. Four of the museum’s keyboard instruments are featured, the music mainly by Mozart. Much of it is unfamiliar, including a set of Church Sonatas for organ and chamber orchestra, freshly performed by Ensemble Les Surprises and organist Louis-Noël Bestion de Camboulas. The beautiful Adagio for Glass harmonica is, for once, played on an actual glass harmonica by Thomas Bloch, to ethereal effect. Komm, liebe Zither, a song for baritone and mandolin, is another charming discovery in an anthology brimming with unusual and intriguing items.
