France Honours Black Music

This year, in honour of Black Music Month, we’re exploring the undeniable impact of Black music and musicians around the world. France’s past and present history with Africa and the West Indies has long rooted Black music in the local culture. From the ’50s, with the dawn of jazz, to the present, Black music has constantly helped with celebrating diversity in France. Pop superstars such as Aya Nakamura (from Mali) or Maître Gims (from Congo) have deeply influenced the music scene, both in France and abroad. Today, many French artists proudly boast the crossroads of their French and African roots, which shapes their music in a unique way. Amongst them, Tayc (of Cameroonian descent) is the new ambassador of Afropop or Afrolove, while Damso (from Congo and Belgium) is one of the new kings of French rap. Lous and the Yakuza (from Congo and Belgium) as well as Yseult (of Cameroonian descent) are two of the new strong French pop artists topping the charts. Dive into our Black Music Month playlist, and if you hear something you like, save it to your library.
