About Spearhead

Led by Michael Franti, formerly of 1980s punk band the Beatnigs and early-'90s alt-hip-hop group the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, Spearhead took the Heroes' socially conscious hip-hop approach and mixed it with funk, reggae, and pop influences for an eclectic, accessible sound. Spearhead's debut album, 1994's Home, crossed over to alternative-rock radio with the song “Hole in the Bucket.” The band proved durable, scoring its first Billboard Top 40 hit 15 years later with the upbeat "Say Hey." While their albums variously leaned closer to one aspect or another of the band's stylistic blend, Franti's highly political lyrical content remained a constant.
