About The Japanese House

The Japanese House is the solo project of British indie-pop singer-songwriter Amber Bain, who describes her introspective music as “a modern day, more depressing ABBA.” ∙ Guided by her musician father, who taught her to play AC/DC and Led Zeppelin songs on guitar, Bain began composing her music at age 11. ∙ When she was 17, she was discovered by Matt Healy of The 1975, who was so impressed with her songwriting that he helped get her a deal with Dirty Hit, his band’s label. ∙ Pools to Bathe In, The Japanese House’s 2015 debut EP, was coproduced by Bain with Matt Healy and George Daniel of The 1975. ∙ Her first full-length album, Good at Falling, reached No. 6 on Billboard’s Heatseekers Albums chart in 2019. ∙ Bain’s career received an additional boost in 2019, when Taylor Swift included The Japanese House’s “Follow My Girl” on one of her Apple Music playlists. ∙ Justin Vernon of Bon Iver duetted with her on “Dionne,” a standout track from the 2020 EP Chewing Cotton Wool.
