Few young stars of black British music's new wave evade genre labels like Yxng Bane. Pulling from the old school R&B, hip hop, dancehall and gospel of his youth in Canning Town, Bane (born Larry Kiala and so named because of an early plan to conceal his face like the musclebound Batman villain) sculpts woozy, diasporic pop with its own determined swing and attitude. “Vroom” is an engine-revving, high life-infused masterclass, “Problem” (with Fredo) proves he can rap as commandingly as he sings and “Rihanna”—the track that sparked his 2017 breakthrough—is hushed and seductive, the perfect calling card for one of the scene's most enigmatic rising talents.
