Youth Lagoon Essentials

Pressing play on a Youth Lagoon song is like slipping into a hazy dream, one that mixes childhood fears with adult anxieties and all the nostalgia that floats in between. Singer-songwriter Trevor Powers (born in 1989) often draws from the experiences and characters of his hometown of Boise, Idaho, when crafting his pensive blend of dreamy minimalism and experimental wonder. He won over indie hearts with 2011’s The Year of Hibernation, a deceptively dynamic debut that quietly churns reverb-soaked ruminations into lilting, bedroom pop. Powers has since turned the inwardness of that first album into more open, expansive journeys through the woozy psychedelia of 2013’s Wondrous Bughouse and the vivid piano portraits of 2023’s Heaven Is a Junkyard—the latter a welcome return to the ethereal world of Youth Lagoon, seven years after Powers had temporarily retired the project.
