Verzuz Cheat Sheet: Bounty Killer x Beenie Man

The Memorial Day weekend edition of Swizz Beatz and Timbaland’s Verzuz series is an event fit for a Kingston bashment or the soft sands of a MoBay resort. Verzuz, which quickly became the most talked-about musical event of the “safer at home” season, tapped dancehall legends Bounty Killer and Beenie Man to follow up the hit-for-hit showdown between hip-hop party-anthem kings Ludacris and Nelly. Bounty and Beenie, who have been forces within dancehall since each broke in the ’90s, have clashed before, having faced off as upstarts during Jamaica’s legendary Sting festival. Beenie Man, a toasting prodigy, released his first album at the age of 10 and has a discography overflowing with songs widely considered the most memorable tracks laid to their respective riddims. As for Bounty Killer—aside from the recording genius of the man known as “Warlord” and “Poor People’s Governor”—he’s served as a certified kingmaker in dancehall. He founded The Alliance, a collective boasting some of the most impactful deejays of the past two decades, including Busy Signal, Mavado, and Vybz Kartel. Dig deep into these two giants’ catalogs with the Bounty Killer and Beenie Man Cheat Sheet playlist, curated by Apple Music host Lowkey.
