Today’s Hits

Following the release of their fourth album Gloria last week, Sam Smith tops Today’s Hits with “I’m Not Here to Make Friends”—a hair-down, disco-indebted moment about getting what you really want in love. “It was a joy to make,” the singer-songwriter tells Apple Music of the track, which was made with Calvin Harris, Jessie Reyez and production/songwriting duo Stargate. “I went on a date the night before, and I was just so sick of [being treated] like a friend. I came in the studio and I was like, ‘I have friends. I love my friends. I’m going on dates for love. I’m there to try and fall in love and start a relationship. I’m not here to have another fucking mate.’” The name of the track—which opens with a sample of RuPaul’s famous saying, “If you don’t love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else?”—also captures a central tenet of Gloria, on which Smith lets go of what’s expected of them as an artist. “The title is an attitude and spirit on the record that I have: I’m done trying to please people now,” they add. “I’m not asking anything of anyone. I’m not here to make friends.” Elsewhere on Today’s Hits this week, hear more huge tracks on heavy rotation right now, including Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers”, RAYE’s “Escapism.” featuring 070 Shake, and Lewis Capaldi’s “Pointless”.
