Beginning with their 2015 EP Nü Religion, the duo—producer Dante Jones (born 1989) and singer Andrew “Drew Love” Neely (born 1992)—have cultivated their shapeshifting aesthetic, and in the process, they’ve become fixtures of alternative R&B. Their diversity of sound shines most when they collaborate outside of their native genre. For “Wait on Me”, an offering from 2023’s Nü Moon, they combine an ambient soundscape with country guitar flares and a feature from Kacey Musgraves. On “Working for It”, they team up with Skrillex and ZHU for a jittery electronic bop, sounding as at home there as on any offering from Nü Religion. By themselves, THEY. can operate in the realm of Noah “40” Shebib-influenced soundbeds or electric guitar-laced ruminations. No matter the audio canvas, you can count on THEY. to be themselves.
