SUUNS Essentials

An experimental spirit drives SUUNS’ genre-blurring records, informing the band’s sonic adventurousness in compositions that explore moody rock, jazz-tinged post-punk, shoegaze and more. It was that same spirit which tied them to—and set them apart from—the orchestral indie rock of their local contemporaries. Formed in Montreal in 2007, SUUNS never rest on their laurels. Their 2010 full-length debut, Zeroes QC, is minimalist and hypnotic; 2013’s Images du futur expands that sound into more melodic territory while also embracing lush arrangements. But throughout their offerings, SUUNS maintain a gripping tension, whether explicit (2016’s jagged “UN-NO”) or subtle (the warped outro of 2018’s warm “Make It Real”). As the band pursue new sounds, that sense of immediacy continues to make their work feel vital—especially in the heavy grooves of 2021’s The Witness—and upholds SUUNS’ reputation as one of Canada’s most innovative groups.
