Slum Village Essentials

T3, Baatin and J Dilla formed Slum Village as Detroit teenagers in the early '90s, attracting the praise of conscious rap icons like Q-Tip and ?uestlove. Dilla's funky, mellow production on the 2000 album Fantastic, Vol. 2 foregrounded the trio's idiosyncratic flows and creative slang. After Dilla left for a solo career, longtime associate Elzhi became a valuable addition. Later radio hits like 2002's “Tainted” (featuring Dwele) and 2004's “Selfish” (featuring Kanye West) presented a version of Slum Village that was more polished but kept their playful, independent spirit.
