Six Feet Under Essentials

Hailing from Tampa, Florida, the birthplace of death metal, Six Feet Under are one of the genre’s foundational bands. Chris Barnes—who founded the band while still fronting Cannibal Corpse in the early ’90s—sounds as if he’s about to puke up a lung. His voice is a guttural howl that, in addition to serving as a delivery mechanism for violent imagery, helps to drive the group’s sonic attack: a dense matrix of plodding grooves and blast beats spiked with riffs inspired by vintage hard rock. Maximum Violence, released in 1999, is certainly one of their goriest albums, but these dudes never let up, torturing ears well into the 21st century.
