When Aaron Maine released his first full-length album under the alias Porches, 2013’s Slow Dance in the Cosmos, it was clear the project aimed to land somewhere between lo-fi ’90s rock and stripped-down indie folk. But as he refined Porches’ approach and became more comfortable in his skin, he embraced a brighter palette: sparkling ’80s synth-pop, throbbing techno-disco and minimalist sophisti-pop. Although Maine’s lyrical introspection pierces the heart, his warm, beat-driven songs especially yearn for belonging and connection—just like the best dance-floor anthems.
