The Subways Essentials

The Subways Essentials

Fusing the bravado of '70s punk with the anomie of '90s alt-rock—and a healthy dose of millennial tenacity—rock trio The Subways found a melodic sweet spot in the midst of distortion and clatter. The members started jamming together in their teens; in 2004, two years into its tenure, the group won the unsigned performers competition at Glastonbury. The piss 'n' vinegar pop-punk of The Subways' early years evolved into a burlier, woollier post-grunge aesthetic over time, but the crew held on to key elements—candy-coated harmonies, a bratty charm—that preserved its youthful sweetness.
