From the moment they sprang from their Surrey bedrooms, self-taught sibling producers Guy and Howard Lawrence have stayed true to their vision. Which is to say, crisp, pop-minded dance that simultaneously honours the bone-juddering traditions of club culture while also pushing the genre forward. A faithfulness to melody and precise song structure has been something of a trademark since the arrival of hit-freighted debut record Settle. So too has a knack for versatile collaboration that encompasses everything from soulful Chicago house fundamentalism (“Holding On” with Gregory Porter) to hatchback-ready ‘90s garage grooves (“You and Me” alongside Eliza Doolittle). Even an increasingly A-list calibre of co-conspirator—Lorde, Kelis, The Weeknd on Motown-inflected R&B blockbuster “Nocturnal”—hasn’t shifted their sonic compass. New track “ENERGY” offers a carnival parade of percussive whistles and sinuous rhythms, while Khalid feature “Know Your Worth” is lightly glitched, mellow soul that gets under your skin without breaking a sweat.
